News Reporter

The Daily Times-Call in Longmont is seeking a temporary half-time reporter for its companion publication, the Carbon Valley edition, which covers the towns of Firestone, Frederick and Dacono. The position runs June 1 through July 30. The successful candidate will work closely with the editor to provide three to four stories a week and complete other assignments. Stories tend to be more feature-oriented, but position also requires ability to write straight news stories. This is a good position for someone looking to gain some valuable journalism experience. The Cortez Journal seeks a sports editor to cover high school sports, outdoor recreation, rodeos and other Southwest Colorado sports-related activities.
The Journal is a family-owned, 3x/week, 7,000-circulation community newspaper. The publication received top awards for general excellence this year from the Associated Press and Colorado Press Association.
The Journal is preparing to launch a redesigned Web site and publish a Monday-through-Saturday online edition. The sports editor must be able to meet daily deadlines and should have a desire to work with online content that ranges from athletic events to special sections.
Frequent and positive reader interaction is a must. The successful applicant will have a degree in journalism or related field and a proven ability to cover sports.
Southwest Colorado, where Cortez is located, ranges from high desert country to San Juan Mountain peaks rising more than 14,000 feet. Residents here enjoy hiking, mountain biking, four-wheeling, camping, fly fishing, hunting, skiing, kayaking, river rafting and other activities. Special Sections Reporter

Responsible for helping to create more than 30 special sections annually, including the weekly real estate section and the monthly Health Line magazine, on behalf of the advertising department. The reporter brainstorms and develops feature and news stories for each section, works with the advertising photographer to generate photo assignments, designs pages primarily using the GoodNews and InDesign, and edits copy with an eye for AP style.

Primary responsibilities include: Write human-interest feature stories for each special section. Code and edit special sections editorial content. Design editorial pages with a limited time constraint. Cross train with editor to facilitate team functions, attend community functions, real estate meetings, banquets, etc. Education: Journalism degree. Experience: Knowledge of journalism principles, design experience, news and feature writing experience. Skills: Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, GoodNews, and press operations. A cooperative attitude with a willingness to work hard and continually learn. Be familiar with AP style.
