'We do not fear change'

It’s not news that the news industry is changing, that it is facing many challenges.

Smaller staff sizes. Limited resources for training. Greater competition.

Newspapers are having to fight more for open records and transparency and against the negative perception of the industry. And, of course, there are always worries about the bottom line and where revenues might come from.

Newspapers even face the question: What does it mean to be a newspaper in the digital age?

At the Colorado Press Association, we do not fear that change. We embrace it. More than ever our members have unique ways of storytelling, more options for revenue and more chances to fight for and cover their communities.

We understand the pressures placed on members, and we’re here to provide resources to help. We offer trainings both in person and via webinar so smaller staffs can have options to become better at their jobs without missing work. These trainings focus on quality, which can help you stand out from your competitors.

The CPA is in the Legislature and the courts, fighting for your rights and for those of your communities. We are also fighting the perception battle: The CPA is one the nation’s leading proponents of newspaper advocacy, establishing a national movement, #newspapersthrive.

When it comes to revenue, not only do we provide educational tools to help you find new streams of income, but we also provide avenues you can use through our for-profit partner, Colorado Press Network.

And as the industry has changed, so has the CPA. Last year, membership overwhelmingly voted to expand what it means to be a member of the CPA, recognizing that what it means to be part of the press is changing.

We’re proud to provide a variety of resources to our members, but it really comes down to three things: education, advocacy and enhancement.

We believe in future of newspapers — in print and digital. And we’re excited to introduce you to the Colorado Press Association and to invite you to consider becoming a member. You face challenges. We want to help you meet them head-on.

We look forward to working with you, and for you.
