Colorado Journalism Week: Tool Kit

  • 2 min to read
I heart real news

The Colorado Press Association, in partnership with the Colorado Broadcasters Association and the Open Media Foundation, is proud to be part of Colorado Journalism Week to celebrate and honor the hard work of Colorado’s working press.

Gov. John Hickenlooper will make the official announcement on Friday, April 13 at the Colorado Press Association's Annual Convention. We plan to email a press release containing a photo a story about Hickenlooper's announcement the evening of April 13.

The week-long celebration starts April 16. The hashtag for the week — and the year — is #RealNewsCO. The ultimate goal is to have a year-round message and advocacy promoting journalism and Colorado journalists.

To help news media organizations, interested allies and residents alike, we've created this toolkit for all to use. It includes he logo, talking points to ignite your ideas for an editorial or column, house ads, social media and digital ads, columns, a video clip of Gov. Hickenlooper announcing Colorado Journalism Week and more.

CPA members: For a suggested plan on how to use the tools in the kit , please see the bottom of this page.

Suggested plan: For print media

Although there are many tools print media can use, we’re hoping CPA members will implement a couple of core concepts as a show of solidarity. In order of preference, they include:

  • Using the talking points as a guide and adding your own thoughts, experiences and resources to write an editorial or column specific to your community. If you’re comfortable with it, place it on the front page of your paper and/or in a prominent space on your website as a message of great importance. We know an argument will be made that it will feel self-serving, but we’re in an environment that advocacy is a priority.
  • Engage your community in this endeavor. Ask residents and local officials to write letters, share social media or even do social media campaigns.
  • Conduct a community event, if not during the week later in the year. Linda Shapley will be at the Colorado Press Association convention on April 13 sharing best practices and ideas as part of the flash sessions.
  • Use the Colorado Journalism Logo on your front page (perhaps somewhere in the mast) and your website throughout the week.
  • Use a multi-platform approach to promoting the week. We are providing a great series of house ads, digital ads, videos and social media concepts. Newspaper media is more than print, and we should promote our work in a variety of ways and on as many platforms as possible in order to reach and non-readers alike.
  • Push the #RealNewsCO hashtag in social media and other formats.
  • On social media, please check the Colorado Press Association’s pages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts and share posts to your page. We will be boosting posts throughout the week, but it will create a stronger reach if you share.
  • If you post local stories on social media, tag Colorado Press so we can share it and increase your awareness, too.
