About our Leadership committees
Committees provide guidance to the CPA staff and make recommendations to the CPA Board of Directors. As a CPA member you can join a committee, voice your ideas, share your expertise and get involved!
Leadership committee positions are only available to CPA members. If you’re interested in becoming a member of the Colorado Press Association and joining a Leadership Committee, check out membership types here.

Contest And Convention Committee
Meeting frequency is once – twice monthly Oct-June online 30-60 minutes.
Who you are:
- You might have a knack for event planning, or maybe you’re just full of great ideas for the convention program. Either way, you’re excited about bringing value to the CPA convention and want participants to leave feeling informed, motivated and fulfilled.
What you will do:
- Help set the standards and expectations of the upcoming convention including, but not limited to, the focal point of each year’s convention, events and speakers
- Advise on categories and rules for the annual contest
- Help decide on flow of events, convention locations and other details
- Guide and plan future conventions
- Research possible new venues and new ways to approach the convention and contest
- Greet convention attendees and provide support at convention events
Who you will work with:
- CPA CEO and Assistant Director
- 2 board members as selected by the board president
- CPA members either volunteering or selected through outreach by president/staff

Advocacy Committee
Meeting frequency is once in October and December, weekly Jan-May online 30-60 minutes.
Who you are:
- You are informed about current issues facing the journalism industry and feel empowered to create change
- You’re passionate about state and national politics, free speech and freedom of the press
What you will do:
- Understand current issues print and online media outlets face on print and online media outlets’ behalf
- Help testify and/or organize member testimony in support of sponsored bills
- Adhere to legislative priorities and strategy to improve the likelihood of success
- Advocate for CPA legislative priorities with decision makers and the public
- Maintain confidence of committee’s business unless directed otherwise
Who you will work with:
- CPA CEO and Assistant Director
- CPA contract lobbyists
- Colorado Freedom of Information executive director
- 3 board members as selected by the board president; board members of this committee would not be on other committees due to the number of times it meets
- CPA members either volunteering or selected through outreach by president/staff

Membership & Bylaws Committee
Meeting frequency is once monthly Sep-Dec, weekly online 30-60 minutes or as needed whenever membership criteria and/or bylaws revisions are necessary.
Who you are:
- You want to ensure that membership dues and benefit propositions are current and maintain value in the ever-changing ecosystem of journalism. You are well-connected within the CPA membership community and feel that you have a good understanding of what is best for all members.
What you will do:
- Examine current member benefits and see what is valued
- Help create new member benefits to continue value in membership
- Conduct outreach so members understand the benefits and opportunities through their membership
- Review and evaluate membership dues structure as needed
Who you will work with:
- CPA CEO and Assistant Director
- Executive committee
- 1-2 former board members
- CPA members either volunteering or selected through outreach by president staff

Ethics & Media Literacy Committee
Meeting frequency as needed.
Who you are:
- You are knowledgeable of the current ethical challenges faced by print and online media outlets and are passionate about arming CPA and the Colorado journalism community with the means to address these situations.
What you will do:
- Discuss current ethical situations faced by print and online media outlets and provide guidance to address those situations
- Guide CPA strategies and tactics in support of ethical journalism
Who you will work with:
- CPA CEO and Assistant Director
- 1-2 CPA board members as selected by the board president
- CPA members either volunteering or selected through outreach by president/staff
