For-profit Legal and Non-Legal News Organization

A for-profit publication or news site must be eligible to be a member by meeting the following requirements:

  1. The for-profit publication must operate to earn a profit.
  2. The publication must be published and printed in an accepted online or print newspaper or magazine format and meet the ethical, news and typographical standards generally recognized by the newspaper and magazine profession.
  3. The publication must produce content and employ staff in Colorado.
  4. The publication must be published consecutively for at least one year prior to application for membership. It must be published in a daily, weekly or monthly cadence and must also bear a fixed title or name and datelines.
  5. The publication must not serve primarily as a platform to promote the interests or opinions of a special interest group, individual or cause
  6. The publication must annually publish, verify and submit to the Association accurate circulation or website traffic figures, based on a recognized auditing agency, a sworn post office statement, or a duly notarized statement.
  7. The yearly average of news-editorial content must not be less than 25% of the newspaper. Of news-editorial content, at least 75% must be produced by the local staff of the newspaper or be purchased from recognized news sources.
  8. Legal newspapers must be recognized under the publication laws of Colorado.

For online news sites:

  1. The online news website must be published using recognized standards of professional journalism. Its content must be revised on a regular basis not less than once per week.
  2. The online news website must be principally devoted to the dissemination of original local or general news and other editorial content (not less than 50 percent of overall content). A substantial portion must be staff produced or locally written and must be available to the general public via the World Wide Web.
  3. The online news website must not serve primarily as a platform to promote the interests or opinions of a special interest group, individual or cause

Cost of For-Profit Membership: Membership dues are based on circulation and frequency of publication. CPA also offers a multi-flag group rate.

Non-profit News Organization

A non-profit publication or news site must be eligible to be a member by meeting the following requirements:

  1. The non-profit publication or news site is a 501 (c)3 whose primary function is news dissemination that meets the ethical, news and typographical standards generally recognized by the newspaper profession. Its content must be revised on a regular basis not less than once per week.
  2. The non-profit publication or news site must produce content and employ staff in Colorado
  3. The non-profit publication or news site must be published consecutively for at least one year prior to application for membership. Print non-profits must be published at least weekly and must also bear a fixed title or name, date lines and numbered volume sequence.
  4. A non-profit print publication must annually publish, verify and submit to the Association accurate circulation figures, based on a recognized auditing agency, a sworn post office statement, or a duly notarized statement.
  5. The yearly average of news-editorial content must not be less than 25% of a non-profit publication or news site. Of news-editorial content, at least 75% must be produced by the local staff of the newspaper or purchased from recognized news sources.
  6. All other definitions of a newspaper or online news site, as determined by the CPA Bylaws and the Board of Directors of the Association, must apply to nonprofit membership.

For online news sites:

  1. The online news website must be published using recognized standards of professional journalism. Its content must be revised on a regular basis not less than once per week.
  2. The online news website must be principally devoted to the dissemination of original local or general news and other editorial content (not less than 50 percent of overall content). A substantial portion must be staff produced or locally written and must be available to the general public via the World Wide Web.

A junior college, community college, college or university newspaper that meet the ethical, news and typographical standards generally recognized by the Newspaper Members of this Association.

As a member of CPA you:

  • Are a non-voting member
  • Are entitled to all social privileges of CPA
  • Cannot take part in the annual contest
